Handball, everyone loves handball. The players love it because of its simplicity and fast pace, and spectators because of…well, the same thing. Still, like all sports, we have to determine who the best in a regional or national area is, and you can see that happen this Saturday when finally, the Red Bull Slaps handball tournament comes back to Coney Island.

If you couldn’t tell from wandering past Coney Island’s handball courts at any given time, handball is pretty popular around New York, so the Red Bull slaps tournament is coming to town to see who the best ball slapper in New York City is. We’re not dealing with any of that “Tri-state area” bullshit either, it’s just 96 of New York City’s best handball players battling to the uh, well not the death, we guess until one of them is exhausted and makes an unforced error.

If you want to see the hot handball action, it’s all going down at the Asser Levy Courts (Surf Avenue and West 5th Street) from 10am to 6pm on August 9. It’s free, so you can filter in and out, if you want to go to the beach or even check out Coney Island History Day, since you’re down there anyway. Big weekend for Coney Island.
