This could be us but u playin.

Us: A Brooklyn-based website in love with finding ways to make life easier and more fun in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Likes include bar deals, hustler success stories, exploring Brooklyn and smart service journalism; we have a particular soft spot for hot scoops and smart takes (and we love a good joke). You: A sharp writer with good journalistic spider-sense and an ability to harness the Brokelyn state of mind; plus proven leadership skills and a strong writing voice that can match us punch for word punch.

Is this you? Then swipe right, because Brokelyn is hiring a full-time editor for the summer!

We’re accepting applications for a managing editor to assist in running the site from late June through Labor Day, with the possibility of continuing on after that. The managing editor will work side by side with editor in chief Tim Donnelly (that’s me!), helping to run the day-to-day on the site. We don’t have an office, so the ability to work remotely on a personal device is key.

This is an excellent opportunity to build your writing portfolio, flex those editorial muscles and get lots of editing, blogging and leadership experience. Brokelyn alumni have gone on to jobs at The New York Times, The New York Post, Vice, New York Magazine, The Observer and Gothamist among others. They’ve appeared on Broad City and Inside Amy Schumer and landed book deals. This, too, can be yours!

Not to mention that while you’re at it, you get to be part of one of the largest, chillest and scrappiest blogging staffs in all of Kings County.

Duties include:
-Assist the EIC with day-to-day duties
-Write clean, clever and compelling copy
-Work closely with writers to edit assignments and prep for publication
-Liaise between contributing writers and EIC
-Maintain editorial calendar and assignment deadlines
-Help lead biweekly editorial meetings
-Represent the voice and face of the blog on social media and at events
-Help evolve our media strategy as we work towards producing video content

Qualifications:
-2+ years experience working in journalism, digital publication or a comparable editorial capacity
-Strong writing skills that maintain consistent tone and style when covering various topics
-Knowledge of Brooklyn culture, institutions and people
-Excellent time-management skills
-Self-starting attitude
-Sense of humor
-Natural curiosity, desire to tell stories
-Social media-savvy
-Knowledge of WordPress is a big plus
-Must live in Brooklyn
-Must love summer
-Being social is also a big plus: Not only is Brokelyn a team sport (as in, we like to hang out with each other), but we also value lots of different opinions and experiences from all over the borough. We want your unique experiences and observations of life out and about in Brooklyn to add to the site’s voice and coverage.

To apply
Send a resume to tim[at]brokelyn.com with the subject line: “Brokelyn editor gig.” We hate cover letters too so don’t send one, just write a friendly email telling us a little bit about yourself, why you’d be a good fit and what topics of expertise/coverage you’d bring to the site.
-Include links to your social media profiles (Twitter, Instagram, etc.) so we can get to know you better.
-Include five samples of your work that show a range of your writing style, digital savvy and/or ability to uncover unique issues.

Pay is on a freelance basis, based on experience.

Reminder: we’re always looking for new contributors too!
