If you’ve paid any attention to the city’s DIY and music scene, you’ve probably heard of Showpaper, the free Todd P-spawned handout chronicling all the all-ages and DIY shows in the city. The print-only publication is handed out at venues all over town, and it’s always beautifully illustrated by local artists; it’s celebrating its sixth anniversary this year by releasing a full 160-plus issue retrospective at the Market Hotel on Friday, and the event is totally free.
The retrospective hits town on Friday at 7pm; the organizers say every single issue will be on display, so you can peruse listings for bands like Yeasayer, Small Black and MGMT from way before they became famous, if there ever was such a time. There will also be box sets available for purchase, if you don’t have a bunch crumpled up by the shoes you destroyed at 285 Kent in 2011. And considering Market Hotel’s its own piece of masterful DIY history in the city, this event promises to be a real experience for lovers of Brooklyn’s music scene. In the meantime, you can check Showpaper’s website for details and photos of some recent issues.
