Brooklyn’s best free and cheap 2k18 Oscars viewing parties

As the 90th annual Academy Awards are nearly upon us, hopefully like me you’ve done the right thing and cancelled your unused Planet Fitness membership to defray the cost of your burgeoning MoviePass obsession to catch up on this year’s nominated films. But if you’re like me, your moviegoing addiction may have also cost you some friendships, leaving you without a home viewing party to attend.

Instead of giving an Oscar-worthy performance of crying alone in your apartment this year while trying to find a working livestream, try attending one of these cool Oscar-watching parties in Brooklyn this Sunday, March 4.

636 DeGraw St., Gowanus

Why watch cooped up at home on one screen when you could be watching in the spacious open-air bar atmosphere here on two screens? The event is free with no RSVP needed, and there will be ballots, and prizes, and drink specials—oh my!

635 Sacket St., Gowanus

It’s the Skint’s fourth annual screening party at Littlefield, where your RSVP gets you a free flute of bubbly. There will be popcorn overflowing and drink specials, so come get your red carpet realness on.

308 Bedford Ave., Williamsburg

Another popping party that will have low wallet impact is being hosted at Videology. First-come, first-serve seating in the viewing room starts at 5:30, so come early to enjoy the awards along with the drinking game they’ve got planned to make you feel like you’re really in the audience of the Golden Globes.

Threes Brewing
333 Douglass St., Gowanus

You don’t have to be a beer lover to love that this venue is giving 10% of the sales of their draft beer and “Don’t Despair” specialty cocktail to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund. Come grab a brewski and maybe leave with some awesome prizes from Oscars trivia.

40 Bogart St., Bushwick
$5 – $10

Swing on down to Syndicated, where it’s only $10 for a ticket to watch at the bar, and $15 in the theater. Free drinks and other prizes will be awarded to the Oscars prediction winners, and if you’re feeling really fancy check out the VIP package.

For a not-so-traditional Oscars experience, check out the following festivities:

House of Yes
2 Wyckoff Ave., Bushwick

After a five year hiatus, the Alt.Oscars Awards are returning to this Bushwick hotspot. This is THE party to attend if you need to Naomi Campbell walk down a red carpet with the chance to win any number of awards for your look that evening. The free tickets are sold out, but $10 isn’t too shabby to express how fabulous and funny you are.

Union Hall
702 Union St., Park Slope
$7 advance, $10 day of

Drunk Education is hosting an anti-Oscars party at Union Hall to benefit RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network), focusing on the ways women, people of color, the LGBT community, and more are marginalized by the entertainment industry. The Oscars will be viewable here as well, but the show itself will be more of a drunken and funny take down of the Man in media.

Northern Territory
12 Franklin St., Greenpoint

In honor of the most nominated Oscar recipient ever, Northern Territory is hosting a Meryl Streep-themed viewing party with the co-hosting help of Instagram account Taste of Streep. The venue is slated to have Streep trivia and prizes. That’s all.

But if you’re like me and seasonal affective disorder is getting the best of you, borrow a friend or family member’s TV provider log-in to stream it live from And just know I will be in my apartment, dressed for a night out yet tucked under the covers, unsure of who will win and which awesome party to attend.
