Remember when all of the Tri-state area’s punks and disco freaks showed up to Hell’s Kitchen in the hopes of impressing Martin Scorsese’s casting director enough to be an extra in his new HBO show about New York’s music scene from the 70s? You can get a glimpse of what they were all dressed up for this week, because the show, the imaginatively titled Rock and Roll at the moment, is filming up in Greenpoint on today and Tuesday, from 6am to 10pm.
You can catch a glimpse of Greenpoint transformed into the 70s through movie magic on the east side of Manhattan Avenue between Dupont and Green Streets and the west side of Manhattan Avenue between Kent and Java Street. Exciting stuff, unless you live there we suppose.
Since we’ve been writingabout the Brooklyn Barge Bar, the crazy/great idea to have a floating bar in Greenpoint, all we’ve had to look at are computerized renderings, which are only so exciting. Finally though, the bar has shown off the seafaring vessel we’ll be drinking on sometime this summer. Yes, right above this paragraph, there is the barge you’ll be drinking on in it’s non-bar form. We asked general manager Will Drawbridge if he could tell us about the barge and he was happy to oblige. (more…)
A little while back, we told you about one man’s dream to dock a floating barge bar on the shores of Greenpoint. Then for a long time, nothing happened, as the Community Board advised the SLA to deny the barge bar’s liquor license and asked questions like “WTF?” and “Will drunk people fall off this thing?” Fortunately for anyone who’s always wanted to drink on the Greenpoint waterfront but not out of a paper bag, the SLA has decided that the barge bar can have a full liquor license. You spent all dang winter staying indoors, avoiding restaurants and cooking out of a crockpot and braising cheap meats. It’s time to get out of the house and eat some food someone else cooked! Of course, you’re still broke, so going out to eat could be a slight problem. No. 7 North, a bar we’re quite fond of, has your back though, because they just introduced a new Tuesday Night Recession menu that has some good eats for as cheap as they come. Well, no, not free, but close to that. (more…)
No laughing, no blinking. via Flickr user Perry McKenna
Despite whatever dreams of sports stardom you may have harbored as a child, you’ve grown up and come to the conclusion that you’re never gonna be a starting NBA point guard (not even on the Knicks). Partially because you decided to spend your time staring at screens, never blinking in an attempt to drink in everything the blessed LCD had to show you. Well now you can put those staring skills to work and make some money, because The Diamond is hosting a staring contest Thursday night that comes with a cash prize for the winner. (more…)
We’ve talked a few times how much we love Greenpoint’s Sunshine Laundromat, because how could you not love a laundromat that’s as much pinball arcade as washery? Right, you can’t. We didn’t think that Sunshine could get any better, but it turns out we were wrong, because the Wall Street Journal reports co-owner Pete Rose wants to start serving beer and wine there, turning the business into a laundromat/pinball/arcade bar. Which would be in the running for best business in New York City, much less Brooklyn. (more…)
106 Green is just one of the Greenpoint galleries you’ve gotta go check out. via Facebook
Now that the G train is (more regularly) reliable, hopping on the train to Greenpoint Avenue is a great alternative to your typical weekend Bedford Ave/Brooklyn Flea/Berg’n routine. Long overshadowed by the perhaps more visible Williamsburg and Bushwick gallery scenes, the waterside stretch of Greenpoint boasts an impressive number of cozy, collaboratively-run artist studios and exhibition spaces, all conveniently nestled together for a perfect lazy Sunday stroll. The best part? They’re all free! Let’s take a look. (more…)

Donate funds and drink free rum to help this rad tattoo artist pay her medical bills. Photo via Twitter.
We live in a town where people like tattoos, like, a lot. And if you’re one of the people that likes tattoos, you probably like a certain tattoo artist you always go to because of his or her kickass inking skills. Erica Flannes, an admired ink expert at Red Rocket Tattoo, unfortunately came upon some bad luck that no one likes: a tumor. To help defray the costs of having the thing removed, Flannes’ friends are having a benefit and reception tonight at Three Kings Studio in Greenpoint where you can donate funds, purchase art and yes, drink some free Sailor Jerry rum. Delilah’s wants you to get your cheesesteak on, fo free. via Facebook
We’ve got to hand it to ‘em: Philly did a pretty good thing when they invented the cheesesteak. Thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, sauteed onions and peppers, if you’re trying to be healthy…you might even say it’s a sandwich worth celebrating. Luckily, the holiday fairies agreed when they created National Cheesesteak Day, and to tout the noble feast, Delilah’s Steaks is giving away their cheesesteaks for free all day on Saturday. (more…)
