Tonight, a cocktail hour with Lemony Snicket

thehourcropThere are book readings with famous authors, and there are book readings with famous authors… and booze. Tonight’s the latter. Lemony Snicket, er, Daniel Handler, of a whole bunch of Unfortunate Events will be at WORD tonight at 7, reading from Bernard DeVoto’s The Hour: A Cocktail Manifesto. Handler wrote a new intro to the 1950s guide to proper drinking, and he’ll be offering some “cocktail therapy” tonight, including his advice on the right drink for every gripe. But it won’t be just words—gin martinis from The Richardson will be flowing.

The evening’s part of NY Book Week, in conjunction with Book Expo America going on at the Javitz Center. Admission to the WORD reading is a slightly un-Brokelyny $20, but that includes the martini (and additional tickets are only $10). Purchase here.

If you’re more interested in the reading than the booze, then wait for Thursday night, May 27, when Jonathan Franzen and David Means read from their latest works at the BPL’s Central Library. This one’s free, and dry, at 7 p.m.
