We don’t know what it is about Gowanus that’s making both faceless food megacorporations and lovely local ice cream concerns move in there, but now those two are getting a new neighbor, with a giant Four & Twenty Blackbirds set to open in Gowanus in August. Will the Elsen sisters be sourcing the water for their pie crust locally, from the canal? Probably not!
The Elsens told Grub Street that they plan to open a 3,000-square-foot storefront on Third Avenue and Gowanus, hopefully in August. For starters, the new storefront will provide even more space to make delicious pies, with room for six ovens instead of just one. Like the Ample Hills move, the Elsens plan on moving their whole pie-making apparatus to the Sackett Street space, but the original storefront on 3rd Avenue and 8th Street will stick around.
In addition to pies, the new space will also offer lunch options, beer and wine, a small retail space to pick up doodads with which to make pies and eventually pie-making classes and a training program for aspiring pie makers. Oh, all that and a rooftop garden. Maybe you’ll see the Elsens or other pie staff relaxing up there with a slice of pie and their favorite book.
