New Trader Joe’s giving out free bags, leis and individualized customer rallying cries

The wait is over: as of 9am this morning City Point’s Trader Joe’s is now open at 445 Albee Square West in Downtown Brooklyn. The opening, exactly a week after the DeKalb Market food hall‘s, is a party. Staffers lined up to welcome customers at the shop’s entrance, adjacent to the food hall, decorating shoppers with leis and bestowing them with free Trader Joe’s bags while cheering them on down a line of employees.

Throughout the store the energy was jovial, a glimpse into the way life could be every day and everywhere if our country wasn’t abounding in food deserts and a lack of affordable groceries (among other problems).

The supermarket has been delayed almost a full year, but all’s well that end’s well and now TJ’s has arrived, food tasting center, build your own six pack and all. The second Trader Joe’s in Brooklyn – the first being the notoriously overcrowded Court St. location – this new branch certainly wasn’t overwhelmingly packed today, at opening, but only time will tell if it reaches the same levels of popularity as the other BK outpost.

There aren’t any grand opening sales or specialty items at the City Point location, except of course the leis and bags, for as long as they last.
