You never can tell what’s coming next in the world of alt-comedy. With two years of an over-the-top variety show in Bushwick, five of a bonafide pun competition (now a home board game) in Gowanus, and that comedy festival Jo Firestone threw inside a car wash, weird has almost become our default setting here in the Brooklyn comedy scene. This latest installment from adultswim is a welcome addition to the canon: local comedian Joe Pera is here to joke you to sleep. (more…)

New York City’s comedy scene always offers you plenty of options, what with bar owners happy to take the dollars of depressed comedians AND their depressed fans in a night of humor. What the city’s comedy scene hasn’t offered you, until now, has been a chance to see some of the weirdest and funniest comedians in the city all coming together for a show in an abandoned car wash on Saturday. That chance is called Firestone Fest (as in Jo Firestone), and it’s bringing in names like Mara Wilson, Julio Torres, Joe Pera, Lorelei Ramirez, Naomi Ekperigin and the Cocoon Central Dance Team under one soapy roof for a 10-hour day of comedy. In an old Williamsburg car wash. (more…)

He’s got some fishy tales for you tonight

Last night’s baseball game didn’t go so long that it should have kept you up last night, but I get it if the result did. That being said, there’s no baseball tonight, so you may as well put your bad feelings about this Wolrd Series aside in a little box, consult the Brokelyn Events Calendar and go to something fun. Like one of these five events, maybe. (more…)

So I understand a number of you might be busy tonight, what with running out to start laying the groundwork for the Kanye West ’20 presidential campaign. That being said, you should make sure you carve out some time to have some fun tonight, because the Brokelyn Event Calendar is filled with some good stuff to do, like the picks below. Maybe do your telephone polling for candidate West’s favoribles and unfavoribles at work, on your boss’ dime. (more…)

It's your chance to hook your friend up with someone else's friend by being that friend

It’s your chance to hook your friend up with someone else’s friend by being that friend

It’s nice on the one hand that you’ve made it to Wednesday and that in the summer Wednesday is closer to the end of the week than usual, but that gravy train is almost over. Soon, people will expect you to actually put in a full effort on Fridays and man what a bummer that’s gonna be. Don’t dwell on it though, instead get out there and have a good time at one of these fun nights out pulled from the Brokelyn Event Calendar, because nothing says “I value fun more than work” like a Thursday hangover. If this is the kind of thing that happens at a normal Macauly Culkin Show, imagine what will happem at their big festival

If this is what happens at a normal Macaulay Culkin Show, imagine what will happem at their big festival.

Last year, we were privilged to be able to see 19 of Brooklyn’s best comedians jump on stage for five minutes at a time at the world’s first Macaulay Culkin Show Summer Comedy Fest. Of course, that was last year, and everyone knows that the summer is made for sequels. Lucky for us then that yet another Avengers-like lineup of Brooklyn comedians is converging on Shea Stadium this weekend for the Macaulay Culkin Show Summer Comedy Fest 2, another star-studded comedy Event. With any luck it’ll avoid Age of Ultron‘s missteps, particularly the way they handle the use of Black Widow. (more…)

There’s big trouble on the horizon, but your old pal Jack Burton is here to take care of it

It’s Tuesday, which is fine, we guess. Certainly it means that if you’re just learning about Montero’s going away soon, at least that dread isn’t combined with Monday’s existential dread. Other than that? Eh, not a huge difference between today and Monday. Except of course that the Brokelyn Event Calendar has new and different fun things for you to do tonight, different things than last night. (more…)
