Cheap art space in Brooklyn is about as hard to find as Hamilton tickets these days. Just like Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip hop retelling of the man on the $10 bill, you can enter a lottery to win studio space inside Spaceworks in Gowanus. Unlike the Hamilton lottery, this one is free and you only have until 11:59pm on January 6 to apply.
Now don’t start stiff arming people like you’re Marshawn Lynch, you don’t have to go all the way to Gowanus to apply for this lottery. You can just apply for it on the Spaceworks website. If you’re one of the people lucky enough to win yourself some new studio space, you will start either in February or March of this year and will be renting the space for one full year. According to Spaceworks “rentals vary in size with prices starting at $395/month for 140 sq ft.”
All you need to throw together for your application are eight work samples, a resume and an artist’s statement, since Spaceworks wants to make sure actual artists are using the space. So if you’ve been complaining to your friends a lot lately, saying that all you need to really get your organic jewelry line off the ground is some space to work besides your coffin-sized bedroom, here’s your chance. Time is ticking, don’t let this opportunity pass you by because you were too busy catching up on Fargo season two.
