You might remember them as the powerful R&B lady trio that brought you “No Scrubs” and “Unpretty.” Or you might just know T-Boz and Chilli from their endearingly irrelevant talent-seeking TV series R U the Girl. But whatever your degree of familiarity with the powerhouse Grammy-band TLC, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to hear that they’re on the rise again—kind of. As it turns out, the band is having to use a crowd-funding campaign to garner funding for their next move.
In fact, T-Boz and Chilli (two-thirds 0f TLC, holding down the band name after Left Eye’s sudden death in 2001) came back just to tell you that they’re leaving again. And this time, it’s for good: they’re using Kickstarter to raise funds for a final studio album. Luckily, T and C are doing their fans one better than your standard famous artist. They’re promising anyone who pledges $5 or more a first-listen to the remixes they’re playing with. And then you actually get to vote on which of ’em gets included in the final album!
Rewards for higher donation levels include personal phone calls from the band ($350 or more), a personal workout with Chilli ($2,000 or more) and an official TLC ONESIE ($5,000 or more, but clearly priceless). By the way, there are only two onesies. Yep. Just two TLC onesies in the whole universe.
Tempted yet? Well, you’re not the only one. The campaign is gaining momentum like crazy, with over 200 backers landing them at almost $20,000 since they launched this morning. Hah, we’ve got a feeling that TLC won’t have any trouble reaching their $150,000 goal well before the deadline.
It’s hard to believe that erstwhile R&B hall-of-famers could ever be down & out on a dollar. But at least now we know it’s really true: they Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg.
