Free air conditioners for the needy

If you’ve somehow managed to survive last week’s heat wave without an AC unit, there is hope for a cool future. According to the Bed-Stuy Patch, free air conditioners are available to low-income, elderly and medically compromised folks. The Sunset Park Redevelopment Committee (in partnership with Community Environmental Center) is offering a program that allows you to potentially get a free energy-efficient AC unit installed in your home. The program begins now and goes until September 2011, or until funds are exhausted.

You’ll need documentation of your income (or proof of being a food stamp recipient), medical need for cooling system, or insurance to qualify, as well as your landlord’s authorization. You can’t own another working AC unit at all, so that the program helps those most in need. Email [email protected] to get an online application, and be sure to include your name, phone number, and mailing address.

I’m writing this message to express my sincerest gratitude for the free air conditioner. I have a serious liver disorder which requires that I stay cool. Several days before I received the air conditioner we had a severe heat wave and I was forced to leave my apartment and visit air conditioned locations to remain cool. Thank you so much! Sincerely, David Gonzalez
