Last night’s baseball game didn’t go so long that it should have kept you up last night, but I get it if the result did. That being said, there’s no baseball tonight, so you may as well put your bad feelings about this Wolrd Series aside in a little box, consult the Brokelyn Events Calendar and go to something fun. Like one of these five events, maybe.
BOO, SUCH A GHOST SHOW, BOO
Tis the season for spooky variety shows, and this one tonight at Aviv should be great. That’s because it’s got comedy from the likes of Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp‘s John Early, and BK comedy mainstays Michelle Wolf and Joe Pera. Will you survive all these laughs? It’s worth the risk to find out.
8pm, Aviv, 496 Morgan Avenue, Bushwick, $8
VOL. 1 AND JOYLAND PRESENT: MIDWEST VS. NYC
In a coincidental bit of timing that matches this World Series (or IS IT a coincidence?), Brooklyn is hosting a literary smackdown of epic proportions as three writers in New York (Emily Schultz, Jason Diamond, Sarah Seltzer) face off against one from the Midwest (Anna Prushinskaya) in what appears to be a handicap match to determine which region is superior. Possibly just literarily, possibly in general.
7pm, WORD, 126 Franklin Street, Greenpoint, FREE
LITERATI: A COMEDY SHOW ABOUT THE GREATEST AMERICAN NOVELS NEVER WRITTEN
Colin O’Brien and Michael Wolf of The Triplets of Kings County want you to appreciate smarter comedy, so to do that, they’re devoting a show to sharing some of the best fiction in American history. Sorry, I meant the best fiction ever by a collection of comedians pretending to be legendary American authors. After all, learning about the fake classics will still allow to be talk like a smug, learned person.
9:30pm, Union Hall, 702 Union Street, Park Slope, $8
MONARCHS: A NIGHT OF DRAG KINGS
There’s never a bad reason to do something nuts on a Thursday night, because Thursday is just Friday by a different name if you look at it from a certain point of view. Follow that path of non-logic to One Last Shag for what’s sure to be a crazy drag show tonight, at the bar known for its quiet and calm atmosphere.
9pm, One Last Shag, 348 Franklin Avenue, Bed-Stuy, FREE
GET JIRO: ANTHONY BOURDAIN AND JOEL ROSE
Anthony Bourdain is a pretty busy guy, what with all the globe trotting and eating he’s always got going on, but somewhere in the middle of all that he found that time to work on a prequel to Get Jiro, his graphic novel about an ass-kicking sushi chef in the Japanese underworld. See him and author Joel Rose talk about it with comic book illustrator Paul Pope tonight, and hope there aren’t shady food underground figures looking to strike out at Bourdain tonight.
7pm, Bookcourt, 163 Court Street, Cobble Hill, FREE
