Live a play designed for you, courtesy of Odyssey Works

Something like this, maybe?
Something like this, maybe?

So you saw our roundup of Brooklyn’s thriving theater scene and were really into it. But then you remembered that you’re one of those people who has a job that demands your attention all the time, to the point when your phone buzzes in your pocket during a date you panic a little bit. You don’t have time to sit down and see a play! But, what if there was a play that was custom designed just for you? And would come to you instead of you coming to it? And it followed you around all day? Well, this could be a reality for you if you get lucky enough for theater group Odyssey Works to pick you as their recipient for a play about and delivered to an audience of one.

The way it works is simple. Or, at least as simple as big productions centered around one person get. For the Brooklyn BEAT Festival, Odyssey Works will select one person in the borough and develop an entire performance piece about them, named An Audience of One. Books, flash mobs, street happenings: any piece of art is in play, as the performance takes over your life for a day that’s “designed to be the most profound artistic moments you’ve ever lived.”

Want in? Yeah, we thought so. The performance will go down on the weekend of September 21, at the end of the BEAT Festival, but before that, there’ a lot of work to do to make it happen. An Audience of One relies on Odyssey Works getting to know you really well, so if you fill out their application (due by April 15), make sure you’re honest about things like a piece of art you saw recently that moved you and your least favorite place in Brooklyn. After all, if a performance tailored to you and only you is bad, well, you’ve got no one to blame but yourself.
