Here’s a rarity in the local food scene: an event that actually lets you eat all the samples, for free! Saturday, the borough’s best wing joints will be competing for bragging rights in the third annual Best Wings in Brooklyn competition at Red Star in Greenpoint. More than 40 nominees, culled from bloggers, area foodies and wing enthusiasts, will be vying for the Judges’ Award, as well as the People’s Choice Award, which will be tallied from the ballots of the attendants, all presided over by the honorable borough President Marty Markowitz! If seeing Mar-Mar (that’s what we call him, right?) isn’t incentive enough, wings are free from 2-6pm, although it’s a good idea to get there early — there’s usually a line.
The event is sponsored in part by Yelp, The Brooklyn Paper, and Brooklyn Exposed, and the proceeds will be donated to the Dr. Theodore Atlas Foundation’s Boxing Program, “Atlas Cops & Kids.” While the wings will be gratis, there’s no word on fixings, so you might consider toting a standard “celery, carrots, bleu cheese, handiwipes” wing survival kit. That is, if you consider yourself a pro.
Best Wings in Brooklyn, Saturday, 2-6pm, Red Star, 37 Greenpoint Ave., Greenpoint.
