Know your rights: new law requires cops to share name and rank

A new law went into effect this past Friday, October 19 and you should know about it. As of now, New York City police officers are required to share their full name and rank when they stop people on the street. That’s not all. In addition to that, the officers will also need to supply a business card.

How did this come about? This new law is a part of a Right to Know Act passed by the city council in January 2018. Taking this a step further, with the Right to Know Act, police officers also must inform people that they have the right to say no to specific types of searches, too.

On these new laws and developments, Councilman Ritchie Torres said: “When you have an armed police officer in front of you, you’re often too afraid to ask an officer who are you and why are you stopping me?” With this in mind, the councilman also believes this will make interactions between officers and citizens more respectful.
