The end of summer brings many depressing things: Summer Fridays are over, you missed your chance to score the perfect tan again this year, no more outdoor movies… but wait! I spy a shining beacon in the distance; we still have something to live for after all! The Gowanus location of pizza place Table 87 (473 3rd Avenue) is serving up something new this fall: free outdoor movies.
Beginning tonight at 8:30pm with a screenng of Mrs. Doubtfire (respectful moment of silence for Robin Williams, please), the coal oven pizza restaurant will be projecting cinematic masterpieces onto the 4th/9th Streets subway viaduct across the street. The sound will be audible via speakers above the outdoor seating on 10th Street where there are ten tables up for grabs. Tables can be reserved ahead of time or, manager Frank Senna says, “people can feel free to bring a lawn chair and just watch and enjoy the free movie.” You don’t have to buy food or a drink, but Table 87 sells pizza by the slice, and besides, it’s not the Brokelyn way to thank someone for showing you a movie by not even buying a beer in their restaurant.
The movie nights will take place every Wednesday at 8:30pm, rain or shine (the restaurant’s awning protects all tables), at least through October. The selection for Wednesday, September 3 will be Dirty Dancing and on September 10 it’s, Top Gun. After that, the films will be announced every Wednesday on Table 87’s website. The restaurant did tell us that October showings are going to be Halloween-friendly features like Beetlejuice, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and other seasonal classics.
As summer winds down and McCarren and Brooklyn Bridge Parks’ outdoor movie series come to an end, things at Table 87 are just heating up! Tonight why not head over to Table 87 in Gowanus for a beer, some delicious pizza (or the amazing Nutella, banana, strawberry dessert pizza), and to relive one of Robin Williams’ greatest performances. Watch out for run-by fruitings!
