How many times have your friends, upon witnessing your latest antics, deemed you “a fucking clown”? Plenty of times, right? So why not take that casual derisions and turn it into professional accomplishment by trying out to be a clown at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus? We know what you’re thinking: “Clown college? You cant eat that.” But come on, what other jobs can you have where you’re allowed to scare children and scar them for life?
Yes, if you’ve ever thought about running away and joining the circus, you’ve actually got a chance in the coming weeks, when Ringling Bros. rolls into the Prudential Center in Newark on March 12 to hold open auditions to be a clown. Of course, you can’t just show up and hit someone with a pie (though we’re sure that would help). Ringling Bros. wants you to have a big heart, an “overactive funny bone,” to have a 3 to 5 minute routine prepared that shows off your clown skills (juggling, unicycle tricks, exaggerated faces that will scare children to death). Oh, and you have to be 18.
The most important think to remember for the audition though, is don’t show up in clown makeup or in a uniform. It’s unsaid on the website, but you have to earn your clown makeup, through hard work and determination. Otherwise, everyone out there would just be walking around with some on, like come kind of clownarchy.
