In recent months there have been a host of opportunities around New York City to consume free sweets for the small price of a mandatory insect topping thanks to The Economist‘s wildly creative promotional pop-ups promoting bug-consumption as a protein-alternative.
Today until 4:30pm the bug brigade has put up camp in Dumbo, on the corner of Water and Jay streets, and is offering a free waffle from the beloved Wafels and Dinges food truck with one topping (Nutella, whipped cream, Speculoos or fudge) of your choice … and either mealworms or crickets. If you get both insects, you get two toppings.
But should even the brokest Brokest Brokester’s limits for taking free food break down at bugs? I tried it to find out. (more…)
Here’s your chance to get a free burger and skip the line. Via Shake Shack Twitter.
New Yorkers love standing in lines, and we never got that Rory Gilmore article about lines to figure out exactly why. One of the most famous lines is Shake Shack, the burger chain beloved by tourists that neither shakes nor is an actual shack (discuss). Now the company wants you to get out of line and get online, and they’ll give you a free burger for it.
DNAinfo reports Shake Shack is giving away free burgers to promote its new order-ahead app: Just download the Shack App, create an account and use the promo code “shackappy” and boom! artery clogging food without having to wait in a line. (more…)
The Brooklyn Bazaar came back to Greenpoint this month in its shiny new digs — [SPOILERS] — and we sure are looking forward to having a place to drink, eat, see live shows, do karaoke and buy our holiday gifts all in one this winter.
But if you’re itching to get there sooner, we recommend tonight, because The Brooklyn Star is offering a smorgasbord of FREE food from the restaurant’s full menu at their Bazaar location! That menu includes fried chicken, jalapeño mac n’ cheese, ham hock collard greens, chili frito pie and more rib sticking southern-inspired dishes that’ll make you glad you can still eat red state food and retain your blue state values.
So drop by the Bazaar anytime tonight between 6 and 9pm for a taste, and while you’re there, check out the venue’s private karaoke rooms, mini golf course and ping pong in the downstairs lounge.

I’ll admit it right now: free food is usually a ploy. Samples at Costco are just tricks to make you buy that 20-inch chocolate cheesecake, and if a restaurant sends you a basket of free fries, you can be sure your food is on it’s way … about a month from now. But I don’t care — I love me some free food anyway, especially in Williamsburg, where the restaurants lately have been trending away from free snacks and toward overpriced toast.
Too few restaurants understand the power of serving delicious freebies along with their delicious meals. I mean seriously: where-oh-where has the bread basket gone. Are we in Europe!? Some people get it though. Here’s a list of my favorite Williamsburg spots that understand the power of freebies. (more…)
Delilah’s wants you to get your cheesesteak on, fo free. via Facebook
We’ve got to hand it to ‘em: Philly did a pretty good thing when they invented the cheesesteak. Thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, sauteed onions and peppers, if you’re trying to be healthy…you might even say it’s a sandwich worth celebrating. Luckily, the holiday fairies agreed when they created National Cheesesteak Day, and to tout the noble feast, Delilah’s Steaks is giving away their cheesesteaks for free all day on Saturday. (more…)
All for you, all for the taking. Well, just one actually. via Facebook
A delicious, but unhealthy, way to start your day is by getting a doughnut. Not that we believe in skipping the doughnut for that reason, we start our day with one at least twice a week. If you like doing that too, you can skip the “paying for the doughnut” part of starting your day with a doughnut because Krispy Kreme is just giving away glazed doughnuts with abandon tomorrow (via Consumerist). The only thing is, you can’t get one anywhere but Penn Station. (more…)
It’s the year of the sheep! Or goat depending on your preferred herding animal. This means fireworks, parades, and plenty of warm delicious dumplings. Given the frozen hellscape of the past few days, we are certainly down for anything that gets us out of the cold for a few hours without missing all the fun. Check out the 9th Annual Chinese New Year Celebration at duckduck (161 Montrose Avenue) tonight for free food, drinks, and other celebratory shenanigans. (more…)
Shake Shack is suddenly valued at $746 million, $200 million more than they were worth last Tuesday, and a staggering amount of money for pretty good hamburgers. Fine by us though, because they’re using their newfound wealth to play Rich Uncle Meatbags, announcing they’ll be giving away breakfast sandwiches and hamburgers today in front of the New York Stock Exchange. Inside will be men screaming “BUY!” and “SELL” and things about capital gains. Outside it’ll be snowing and you’ll be waiting for a free hamburger. Advantage: You. (more…)

It’s officially cold out – which means we’re constantly on the prowl for something warm, brothy, and spicy to perk our spirits and regain feeling in our extremities. Well X’ian Famous Foods (648 Manhattan Avenue) delivers on all three of those points with free noodle and burger dishes on Saturday in honor of their Greenpoint outpost’s opening. (more…)

When it comes to what we want out of life, the list pretty much goes : 1. Ability to pay rent, 2. Sane roommates, 3. Free cheese. So it will come as barely a surprise that when we heard the words “free cheese party,” we were already sharpening our knife set in anticipation. (more…)
