This weekend: The Books, mermaids, bubble battle

FRIDAY
7pm: tonight’s celebrate brooklyn! concert at the prospect park bandshell features the books, junip (w. jose gonzalez), and doveman (thomas bartlett). after party @ bell house 11pm with gonzalez on the decks. free ($3 sugg. don.).

7:30pm: musician/authors rick moody and wesley stace (john wesley harding) give a hybrid music performance and reading at liu’s brooklyn campus, $5

10pm-6am: bangon!nyc presents ‘tijuana east’, ‘an electro/dubstep/disco fiesta with flamenco dancers, mariachi go-go girls, authentic tacos, and giant piñatas filled with booze, porn, and cigarettes’. free sangria 10-11pm, free tequila shot for the appropriatelt attired. wild east salon (372 ten eyck st.), brooklyn, $7 adv, $10 door.

SATURDAY
11am: strawberry shortcake eating contest! prizes for fastest, cleanest and messiest eaters. williamsburg’s smorgasburg greenmarket, free.

12-5:30pm: recess: play badminton on 11 outdoor courts, plus free bike rides, food vendors, a beer garden, more. colonel’s row, governors island.

12-6pm: brooklyn based’s ‘total smith street immersion’ is a bar, shopping, and eating crawl all along smith street. free brooklyn brewed beer and discounts at participating shops.

2pm: march or watch the procession down coney island’s surf ave for the 28th annual mermaid parade.

2-8pm: williamsburg walks returns! bedford ave from n. 4th to n. 11th closes to traffic and opens for a free snow cones, free bike helmets, human scrabble, more.

6pm: bring your bubble maker and solution for the annual bubble battle! coney island boardwalk @ w. 8th st., free.

6:30pm: get your minor league baseball fix for a fraction of the cost of the majors at the brooklyn cyclones‘ first home game. bonus: fireworks every saturday! mcu park, $8-16.

SUNDAY
11am-5pm (monthly thru oct): 13 trucks are set to show for the food truck rally at prospect park’s grand army plaza: cupcake stop, vanleeuwen ice cream, rickshaw dumpling, red hook lobster pound, more. pay-as-you-go.

12-6pm: bring your old books for a community book swap + housing works benefit. raffles for fornino, greenlight books, word, cafe grumpy, more. public assembly, $1 sugg. donation for entry.

12-6pm: 500 vendors set up shop for park slope’s 7th heaven street festival, spanning 23 blocks from flatbush to 18th st.

8pm: hakuna matata! sing-along to the lion king at the bell house. impersonation + costume contests, frozen chocolate bananas, themed drinks, trivia, more. $8.

thru 6/19: the l magazine’s massive northside festival brings four days of music, film and open studios to williamsburg and greenpoint. free-$18

thru 6/23: indiescreen screens doc. battle for brooklyn, about the controversy surrounding the atlantic yards site. directors q+a at most screenings. $12.
