A tree grows in Brooklyn, with your help of course! Who says New York is a concrete jungle without enough greenery? This year marks year 7 of MillionTreesNYC’s free tree giveaway. That’s right, free fruit trees for you to take home and plant at home or at a community garden, to take care of, raise as your own beautiful child, and literally enjoy the fruits of your labor!
New York Restoration Project (NYRP) is giving away 4,500 trees at 40 different giveaways, including 10 events throughout Brooklyn, starting this Saturday, September 6. The giveaway will feature exclusively fruit trees, such as Indian Blood Peaches, Pristine Apples, and Prima Almonds, amongst others.
The first Brooklyn giveaway is on Saturday, at 410 Livonia Avenue (Brownsville), but if you can’t make that one, you can check out a calendar and interactive map showing you where and when the events will take place. There are only a few stipulations to snagging a tree. You have to plant it in one of the 5 boroughs, water and maintain it, and you can’t plant them along streets, in city parks, containers, terraces, balconies, or on roofs.
Typically registration begins two weeks before each giveaway, during which you sign up for your tree and pick up at the scheduled event. With 40 giveaways spread out in all 5 boroughs there’s no doubt one will be near you, but if registration closes before you can sign up for a tree, a limited number will be given out at each event on a first come first serve basis..
