Pipin’s Pub, 9701 3rd Ave. (corner of 97th St.), Bay Ridge, 718-833-1183
What it is: Cozy neighborhood pub just a few blocks from the Verrazano Bridge; Bay Ridge institution since 1969.
Why we love it: It has a dignified, yet festive ambience, complete with a fireplace and a crowd that skews a bit older. A relaxing place to order a beer and a burger and catch the game at the bar, or get a table in the dining area in the back for a full sit-down dinner. But it isn’t all quiet nights; the owners are devoted to celebration, hosting annual events like a Columbus Day Sunday block party and a November pig roast. Bring a date to take for a post-beers romantic walk down by the Verrazano.
What to order: The 10 oz. ABC burger (avocado, bacon and blue cheese), served on a panini roll ($10.95, $7 on Mondays) with fries and a sour pickle, and a pint of Guinness. Monday and Thursday nights during football season, order $5 Buffalo wings.
Regular tip: The founding owners named the bar after the Steinbeck novella The Short Reign of Pippin the IV; a weathered copy sits on a mantle behind the bar.
Pipin’s Pub is featured in the 2015 South Brooklyn & the Rockaways Beer Book, on sale now.
