This week in Anti-Trump activism: the Women’s Strike and more

It’s finally here, y’all: the women’s strike. And while the strike is intended to show just how much work women do, and is ultimately one of the biggest shows of force this week, that doesn’t mean every woman has the ability or resources to take a day off work. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to take action against Trump before, after, and during this Wednesday. Without further ado, here they are:

MONDAY (TODAY)

Community Mondays with the Collective Kitchen
Mayday Space

Each Monday, Mayday Space hosts a communal dinner. The weekly meal is designed to help people get to know the space, which hosts dozens of activist events each week, build community, and cook a meal together. They’ll start cooking around 5:30, and everyone is welcome to attend.

NOT ONE MORE: Rally in Response to Death of 7 Black Trans Women
Barclays Center

We’re less than three months into 2017, and seven black trans women have already been murdered this year. Stand with the Trans Women of Color Collective, @VOCAL-Queerocracy, Black Youth Project 100, and Black Lives Matter NYC on Monday as they rally together in solidarity with black trans women everywhere and call for an end to transphobic violence.

TUESDAY

Rally Against Businesses Supporting the Border Wall

Most reasonable people oppose Trump’s proposed wall along the US-Mexico border, but unfortunately, we live in a world where corporations are also people–and some companies are super into the idea of an expensive, ineffective and inhumane wall. On Tuesday afternoon, Public Advocate Letitia James will lead a rally at Foley Square that will send a message to these companies: if you support the wall, we won’t support you.

Since Trump’s inauguration, a group of dedicated postcard-writers have mailed hundreds of postcards, written over a drink or two, to our representatives. They have themed postcards, $5 beer-and-shot specials, and writing prompts for cards you can send anyone you think needs to listen — from Chuck Schumer to NASA. The event is free, but it’s recommended that you donate $2 for stamps and other supplies.

Jail and Court Support Training

Join MACC Legal Support for a know your rights workshop on jail and court support training. If, at an upcoming protest, one of your friends gets arrested (yes, it happens, and no, it rarely has anything to do with how peacefully you’re protesting), you’ll probably have a few questions: Where are they being taken? When will they get out? Should I call a lawyer? You’ll find out the answers to all of these and more at Tuesday’s workshop, and there will be written materials available for you to take home.

How to Colonize a City Without Even Trying: The Brooklyn Wars

Join author and journalist Neil deMause as he discusses his book, The Brooklyn Wars, which details the winners and losers in fights between communities, developers, and city planners, as well as what can be done to stop the borough from being overrun with Whole Foods, WeWorks, and million-square-foot luxury buildings.

This month’s Artist Coalition general meeting will focus on fire safety, strategizing for upcoming town halls, and developing a survey for member spaces. Attendees will break into small groups to learn about what it takes to become a certified fire guard and prepare for the Fire Guard test, strategize for upcoming town halls with the Department of Cultural Affairs, and develop a survey that identifies the biggest issues facing community spaces. There will be snacks!

All proceeds from drink sales between 7 and 10pm will be donated to the Billion Oyster Project, the Newtown Creek Alliance, and Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park. Each organization will have guest bartenders on hand to discuss the work they do and how you can get involved.

WEDNESDAY

International Women’s Strike: Rally and March
Washington Square Park, Manhattan

Celebrate International Women’s Day by taking the day off and heading to Washington Square Park for a rally. Starting at 4pm, the rally kicks off with a performance of Peruvian artist Alejandra Ballón’s “La Alfombra Roja,” (The Red Carpet), as well as musical performances by Natalia Saez, Renee Ghoust and Liah Alonso. At 5:30, everyone will march to Zuccotti Park, with a few stops along the way, including the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory site, the Varick Street Immigration Detention Center, Stonewall, City Hall,financial institutions funding the Dakota Access Pipeline, the African Burial Ground and the former slave market, and more.

International Women’s Day Movie Screening: She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry

Join the Park Slope Parents Association for a special screening of She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry, a film about the origins of the women’s liberation movement in the 1960s, made by a women who lived through the movement. The screening can only fit 50 people, so RSVP here if you plan on attending!

Learn about reproductive rights while having a few laughs with the Simple Show. This month, the show features comedy from Ana Fabrega and Sachi Ezura, as well as a presentation on reproductive justice and related topics from Poppy Liu, the founder of Collective Sex and creator of Names of Women.

This month’s Devour Hour comedy show just so happens to fall on International Women’s Day, and the lineup just so happens to include a bunch of hilarious women. Performers include Sonia Denis, Mitra Jouhari, Sydnee Washington, Catherine Cohen, and Noa Osheroff. After the show, Hank’s is hosting an afterparty for the strike, with proceeds benefitting the ACLU. The food of the month is empanadas!

BYO Art for International Women’s Day

Women artists are invited to bring their works (just one piece, please) to put on display at the Living Gallery on International Women’s Day. A $5 suggested donation gets you into the show, and all proceeds go directly to The Bushwick Exchange, a zine dedicated to sharing free resources in the neighborhood. If you want to buy art, this is a great opportunity to do so; and if you want to sell your art, the gallery won’t take a cut.

THURSDAY

Solidarity Rally Against Deportation

Join advocacy organizations including Detention Watch Network, the Immigrant Defense Project, Make the Road New York, and more for a rally in solidarity with immigrants across the country. Following a press conference at 9, the group will silently walk around 26 Federal Plaza and stand with individuals and families facing deportation, as well as calling for a system that values the lives and rights of all workers, gives immigrant communities the right to remain with their families, and practices justice, compassion, kindness, and generosity.

We may get accused of living in a liberal bubble here (and okay, yeah, maybe we do), but that doesn’t mean we can’t help out elsewhere. On Thursday, Iron Station is hosting a party to support the North Carolina Democratic Party. That way, you can support a red state without having to move there.

Melinda González, co-founder of BombaYo, will discuss Latino cultural traditions that are rooted in the African diaspora and are effective at teaching resistance and resilience. The discussion will also include discussions on the campaign on freeing Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera, whose sentence was commuted by President Obama in January. There will also be a community healing drum sharing by Jose L. Ortiz, aka Dr. Drum, director of Afro Puerto Rican drum and dance ensemble.
