Tech jobs pay $118,600/year, 50% more than the average city salary

Sure everyone in New York is apparently a fashion designer, but they must be a bunch of damn hippies “doing what I love” and other such treacly crap, because they can’t be in it for the money. If you want to get rich, go back in time and learn to code, because according to a report by the state comptroller’s office [h/t Crain’s] the average tech sector salary in New York City is $118,600 per year, 50% higher than the city’s average salary of $79,5000. Surprisingly, most of the tech jobs just revolved around helping dads and grandmas “helping to turn on the Google, how do I do it again?”

OK, not true, but we’re sure someone read that and went to make a startup from it. After all, according to the report, the tech sector had 33% job growth from 2009 to 2013, while the rest of us picked through the garbage scraps of the city’s 9% job growth rate at the same time. And the sector is growing out from Manhattan, spreading into Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, the Navy Yard, which form what’s known as Brooklyn’s “Tech Triangle.”

We’ll leave it up to you and up to time to determine if this is a good thing or if it’s the culmination of a plot to turn New York City in San Francisco East, with it’s attendant baggage of public tensions and people throwing up on buses.
