Williamsburg might be pushing out all the artists in favor of Urban Outfitters, but that doesn’t mean you can’t leave your creative mark on what’s left of the neighborhood. The Northside Town Hall Community and Cultural Center is looking to jazz up Wythe Avenue before it becomes completely condo-ified, and they want your help: they’ve put out a call for mural/artwork proposals to hang outside an old firehouse for the next year or two.
The cultural center plans to turn the Engine Co. 212 Firehouse at 134 Wythe Ave into a multiuse gallery/exhibition space, and they want to jumpstart the historic building’s redevelopment with a little local outdoor art. They’re encouraging Brooklyn visual artists to apply, and they want the work to be Williamsburg-centric, though they’d prefer the focus to be more on the neighborhood’s artistic aspect, so maybe don’t include any references to vomiting Turkey’s Nest margaritas on the McCarren Park softball field.
Submissions “should help to showcase the vitality of the North Brooklyn Creative Community, highlight the spirit of the Firehouse’s role as a historically important site of local activism, and draw attention to its rich presence,” and proposals are due by April 1st; to apply, fill out a submission form and send that, your resume, bio, rendering of proposed mural/artwork, a sample of past work and a supply budget to arts@nthccc.org.
