Way back during Sandy, we had to deliver the tough news that the Red Hook Fairway was going to be closed for awhile. “Way more than a month,” they told us, and it was certainly true, as they had to end up gutting damn near the entire store. But they’ve worked pretty quickly, considering the devastation, and even managed to hire additional workers in addition to taking their existing staff back. And now, after what has felt like a very brief four month period with no Fairway, founder Howie Glickberg announced the exciting news that Fairway will be back on March 1! Video proof after the jump.
We’re all very excited obviously, both because this means the return of a good grocery store and a major economic anchor in Red Hook, which is STILL digging out from that stupid hurricane. And it’s great to hear that Fairway was always there to help out during the recovery with supplies from their other locations. We’re a little intrigued though, about Christine Quinn’s kinda-public shaming of unnamed grocery stores who wouldn’t help out when the City Council came calling. Who were they? Obviously not Gristedes, because God knows that’s the perfect time and place to sink John Catsimatidis’ mayoral candidacy right then and there. So who can Quinn be talking about?
