A 15-taco tour of Bushwick

Taco 13

Taqueria El Paisa, 298 Irving Ave., (718) 456 – 2095

I really like this place. They have stools outside and all the food looked really good. The chorizo taco was packed with salty/spicy meat… almost perfect except that by the time I finished the taco I was drenched in oil. Probably why it tasted so good.

Also a salad taco, but this pulled it off. The goat was so good in my mouth. One warning, I ordered the non-spicy goat taco and yet it came with these monstrous and destroying red peppers. The tacos took about 15-20 minutes to make which was annoying, and then I was charged way more than I was supposed to be… like eight dollars instead of three. At least hey corrected it when I pointed it out.Side note, my friend asked if it was wrong to want a flour tortilla. Answer? Yes it is. They taste bad, they get mushy and most importantly they have more calories. I think they do, anyway.

Taco 15

Vianey & Vero, 250 Wyckoff Ave.

I feel like you have to ignore your instinct to not eat at this place. If you can, then walk past the shoes hanging from the ceiling and you will find a little back area where you can order food. I’m like, not into child labor or anything, but I really like that a 9-year-old took my order. He was very professional. The pictured taco is the carnitas one. This is a very simple and standard taco. Meat, onion, cilantro. Blamo.

While I think it’s fair to say that your average Bushwick taco is worth the $3 you’ll spend, the winners on my 15-taco tour were the goat taco at Taqueria Cocoyoc and the chorizo one at El Paisa Taqueria. If you have a favorite Bushwick taco I missed, let me know — I’m up for another 15 any time.

  • The taco truck outside of the Morgan stop by far has some of the best tacos I've had in Brooklyn. They run about $2 a piece and if you play your cards right you might get them to give you a shot of tequila....

  • Agreed (I think). The only problem is that the taco truck is around the corner from Pine Box, and Pine Box has pickle backs... therefore, while consumed, no review of the Morgan Stop taco truck was able to be formed.

    • Oh snap! Guess I never realized how trainist I am. Any good suggestions? I'm always up for taco tour 16 - 30.

      • La Cholulita is great. Technically it's in Bed-Stuy bc it's on the south side of B-way, but I think their tacos are some of the best. (And I noticed the tag on the article says Bed-Stuy/Bushwick). They have great cemitas as well. La Pasadita, the truck that hangs out outside of Mr. Kiwi's at Myrtle/B-way is pretty good too. I like their al pastor tacos and quesadillas con papas y chorizo.

  • I haven't eaten Mexican in Bushwick in awhile, but I remember enjoying the truck right outside of the Myrtle-Wyckoff stop on the L/M, just east of the elevated tracks on Wyckoff.

Going to have to agree with the majority about Dos Hermanos. Not to be that asshole, but I think it was better when it was actually part of the factory, not sealed off like it is now. The "gringoization," after the NY Times review/the DOH shutting them down kind of killed it.

  • gurl, you talk the taco talk
    AND
    walk the taco walk
(even if it is a waddle)

Looking forward to retracing (most of) your footsteps. What's your
absolute favorite Brooklyn Mexican food joint?

  • I've tried most of those, and you are actually missing the very best in bushwick, and in my opinion, blows away the tacos in jackson heights or sunset park... It's a taco truck (not a cart) at the corner of myrtle and wyckoff right off the jmz.... called "tacos la carcachita"

My favorite are the chichurron and the pork enchilada tacos. how i miss this place since leaving the hood....

they are open pretty late (5am or so) - however not on mondays.

    enjoy

    • Thanks for the recommendation - I'll be trying it shortly! And yes, I'm sure you're right. You are after all the Taco Boy.
