Who would have thought that Doctors Without Borders’ first-ever operation on U.S. soil would be right here in New York City—in Far Rockaway? Nearly two weeks after Sandy, our neighbors still need help. Here’s what you can do this weekend and beyond:

Park Slope
The Park Slope Armory still needs volunteers to help with elderly hurricane evacuees. Sign up here. Located at 361 15 street between 7th and 8th Avenues.

All JackRabbit sport store locations (Park Slope 151 Seventh Ave.; Union Square 42 W. 14th St.; and Upper West Side 140 W. 72nd St.) are providing bus transportation for up to 500 volunteers to clean up in hard-hit areas this Sunday. Registration required. Pickup time is 7:30 a.m. UPDATE: OPPORTUNITY FILLED.
Congregation Beth Elohim needs water, batteries, flashlights, toilet paper, and non-perishables. Please bring donations to their chapel distribution center at 274 Garfield. Contact sandy@cbebk.org or (718) 768-3814.

Coney Island
#ConeyRecovers
is looking for cleanup volunteers tomorrow at 9am. If you’re interested, please fill out this brief sign-up form. Meet at Tom’s Restaurant, located on the Boardwalk at the end of Stillwell Avenue (one block from the Coney Island-Stillwell Ave subway terminal), to sign in and get your volunteer assignment.

People’s Relief is URGENTLY seeking translators on Coney Island this weekend who speak Russian, Arabic, Yiddish, and Spanish to communicate with elderly and disabled people trapped in housing projects. Interested volunteers can e-mail peoplesrelief@gmail.com or call 415-326-6394.

PS/IS 288 in Coney Island was destroyed by the storm. Students need composition notebooks, two pocket folders, pens, pencils, sharpeners, any schools supplies really. You can drop off all donations to IS 228 located at 228 Avenue S, Brooklyn NY 11223 (718) 375-7635.

COJECO, a Jewish émigré community organization, is looking for volunteers to meet at  the Shorefront Y (3300 Coney Island Ave.) any time between 10:30am-3pm Saturday to be dispatched to neighboring communities. Ritaly Rapaport is the on-site coordinator. If you have a group that can come with 3-4 people, gas and a car, call Eugene Klig at COJECO in the morning at (917) 744-2600 or email cojeco.volunteers@gmail.com.

The Coney Island community needs volunteers to help go house-to-house to clean up. Call Sea Gate Command Center at (718) 705-9666 if you can help.

PS 90 in Coney Island, which has now been relocated to IS 96, is in desperate need of supplies. Items can be dropped off at IS 96: Seth Low 99 Avenue P. Brooklyn, NY 11204. Specific needs include: shampoo, soap, sponges, feminine hygiene products, shaving cream, diapers, wet wipes, towels, bedding, socks, gloves, hats, underwear, jackets, kid’s clothes  (sizes for ages 3-11, majority in mid-range), sweatshirts, shoes, gift cards are great, too (Target, CVS, Walgreens, RiteAid, Visa check cards.)

Gerritsen Beach
Gerritsen Beach needs 100 electricians to help restore power. The city must approve the work before reconnecting the houses. They also have to worry about just staying dry and warm, so organizational efforts are floundering. If you’re an electrician, or someone with a bit of organizational savvy, get in touch with Kathy Ene ASAP.

Red Hook
If you’d like to volunteer with the Red Hook Initiative, please report to 480 Van Brunt Street (above Fairway), third floor. Volunteers will be assisting business owners with clean up from the storm, canvassing the neighborhood, and assisting with supply distribution. If you would like to provide a hot meal, please email food@rhicenter.org If you would like to donate, you may do so online at www.rhicenter.org. (At this time they’re not accepting any more supplies.)

  • Hello and thank you so much for posting our urgent need for translators in Coney Island! I am writing on behalf of the People's Relief team and would like to ask that you update the information on this source. If translators would like to volunteer, please have them call 415-3-CONEY-4 (or 415-326-6394) instead of Adrien's number that's currently posted. Adrien is one of the lead coordinators of our efforts and that phone # is a personal phone that's been slammed by calls as a result. We're really glad to get the support, but just wanna make sure this get's switched so we can more effectively operate. Thanks so much!! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us at peoplesrelief@gmail.com
