Where to donate blood in Brooklyn

via iVolunteer

While many of us in Brooklyn emerged from Sandy safe and sound, countless others are injured in the midst of depleted resources. The New York Blood Center is seeking able bodies to donate blood at one of their emergency drives this weekend. If you can make it to Bay Ridge by 6:30 or downtown Brooklyn by 7:30 this evening, facilities will be set up to take your blood and platelet donations.

Red Hook, Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Sheepshead Bay will also be hosting drives throughout the weekend and Monday. Walk-ins are of course welcome, but lines can be long, so consider making an appointment to cut down on wait time. Just be sure to give blood after performing any labor-intensive volunteer work. Lookin’ at you, O-.

  • As of yesterday, at Brooklyn Donor Center they were putting donors with appointments and walk-ins in the same line. Even if you make an appointment, you should expect to wait a couple hours during peak times.

    • Yeah, I called yesterday and they said don't even bother making an appointment. NY Blood Center not always the most organized folks, but their hearts are in the right place.

  • My appointment yesterday at the Lawrence Street center was ignored. They told me to wait in line for three hours, even though I'm O-, which I just couldn't do yesterday.

I know it's bratty to complain about having to wait to donate in this time, but why are they even making appointment if they don't honor them? I would really love to donate.

  • Are you sure that location for benner road in red hook is in Brooklyn? I think that may be upstate.
