This weekend: Folk Festival, Mad Men, Wizard of Oz

FRIDAY
8pm:
get a preview of the brooklyn folk festival (5/18-20) at jalopy with elizabeth butters, 4 o’clock flowers, the whiskey spitters and the dust busters, $10.

8pm: lush rock band bird of youth play the rock shop, $8.

8pm-3am: the red and black masquerade ball promises buto, aerialists, projection installations, and live music. red and black formalwear strongly encouraged. house of yes, $12 admission includes a drink.

midnight: 17-piece ‘disco orchestra’ escort brings us back to the studio 54 era with some help from dfa records djs at brooklyn bowl, $10

SATURDAY
7:30pm
: don’t be a cowardly lion, embrace your inner dorothy at the wizard of oz sing-along! costume and trivia contests, a wicked witch piñata, themed drinks, more. emerald city the bell house, $10 adv, $12 dos.

8pm doors: it’s a brooklyn old-time bluegrass extravaganza at union hall with the whistling wolves, the union street preservation society, and the third wheel band, $8.

9pm: the filmshop collective presents wanderlust a night of 2-minute films, including performances by firehorse, conveyor, alyson greenfield, more. mhow, $10.

9pm: indie electric violin player bitch plays the bam cafe, free.

SUNDAY
1pm: popular sxsw showcase the aussie bbq comes to the bell house with 15 australian bands and free bbq (veggie options available). $12 adv, $15 dos.

4-8pm: there’ll be music, libations and a winter sale rack at the grand opening of new east williamsburg vintage store/yoga studio/film screening locale olly oxen free. 137 montrose ave.

5pm: get a firefly primer with three choice episodes at the way station, free.

8/9pm: there’s no telling what internet meme this season of mad men will inspire. (remember sad don draper?) don your finest ’60s vintage to these premiere parties:

sat-sun 11am-7pm: who says pure breeds are best? the 3rd annual brooklyn mutt show returns to the brooklyn lyceum. prizes for ‘curliest tail’, ‘looks most like owner’, more. $5 donation to watch, $25/30 for your canine to compete.
