If you’ll recall, city council member and brunch ally Stephen Levin previously made news for opening up the city’s budgeting process to people in his council district. The question of what to do with a cool one million dollars was left up to residents Levin represented, who eventually decided on tree planting, some park upgrades and school technology funds, all noble goals. If you missed out on the process last time, or have an awesome idea, we’ve got good news: Levin is looking for people to join a committee for the budget program’s next round.
It sounds like pretty serious work, but then again, he’s letting people decide on how to spend serious amounts of money. Between August of this year and May of next year, the committee will meet from 6-9 times to discuss the rules of the process, then make the key decisions about the spending as those decisions come up. If you live in Levin’s district, which encompasses Boerum Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, DUMBO, north Park Slope and Vinegar Hill, and you know want to get involved, there are one of two informational sessions you can check out to learn more:
1. The Boerum Hill YWCA (30 3rd Avenue), on August 8 from 5:30pm to 8pm
2. The Polish Slavic Center (176 Java Street, Greenpoint) on August 19 from 5:30pm to 8pm.
And remember: NO EMBEZZLING!

I think we should send it all to Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council. Or would that count as embezzling?
