Today is National Margarita Day! So, friends, ask not what tequila can do for you, but what you can do for tequila: namely, consume it in large amounts with lots of salt and lime.
For naysayers who believe margaritas to be a thing for summer and only summer, this elderly talking puppet puts it best, “In the darkness of winter we need the citrus vitality and joyful fellowship of National Margarita Day all the more.” Also, it kind of feels like spring outside right, which is the next best thing to summer.
________
In honor of this saltiest of holidays, Williamsburg’s McCarren Hotel & Pool are offering $8 margarita specials at its bar, Oleanders, till from 5 to 11pm. You can choose from an Ultimate Classic Margarita, a Coconut Margarita and a Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita.
As well, we’ve rounded up our other favorite BK marg spots just for you. Check em’ out:
Taco Dumbo
56 Prospect St., Dumbo
This brand spankin new restaurant opened back in November in Jared Kushner’s in-the-works “tech campus” neighborhood Dumbo Heights. It’s got a “cold pressed margarita bar” for $11 per and plenty of vegan-friendly options.
Calexico
645 Manhattan Ave., Greenpoint
278 5th Ave., Park Slope
This colorful, family-friendly Mexican joint has locations in Red Hook (they don’t have margaritas, though), Greenpoint and Park Slope. They’ll do it on the rocks or frozen, with lots of flavor options for $10 per. Their margs may be deceptively small, but they tend to be quite strong. PLUS your first margarita is on them today, at all but their Red Hook location.
Miti Miti
138 Fifth Ave., Park Slope
A tapas bar, Miti Miti has great Mexican street corn and dope, plentiful happy hours: Wednesdays (today) the happy hour is all day, meaning classic margaritas are $5 and flavored margaritas are $8. Their most original flavor is probably the smokey caramelized pineapple margarita. Yum-o.
Fonda
434 Seventh Ave., Park Slope
For $10 you can chug as many margaritas, champagne, beer and wine, your poor liver can handle in the course of an hour. So, realistically speaking, that’s $10 for 10 margaritas, if you can successfully break their cost-effective equation and drink a full margarita every six minutes.
Gran Electrica
5 Front St., Dumbo
Gran Electrica is on the pricey side ($13 a marg), but hey, it’s a national holiday, and their margaritas are really freakin’ good. For the spicy-abled, there’s the habanero-infused margarita de toronja picante, for the more traditional the margarita de pepino with cilantro, lime salt, combier, and other ingredients, and then there’s the de remolacha, featuring red beet.
________
If National Margarita Day is somehow not sufficient enough reason for you to drink a marg, then at least pour one out in honor of Park Slope’s closed La Taqueria and their $20 margarita pitchers, and other beloved but past highlights of this fair borough’s margarita culture, history, and $weet deals.
And make sure your bartender is aware of local salt resources here in Brooklyn.
