Grocery shopping can be stressful enough without worrying that the food you eat is about to give you a terrible disease. You’ve got a big store full of other people who are hungry and frustrated and want the same food you do. So you probably don’t even think about whether or not the store has been slapped with multiple horrible health violations by the state. Fortunately, the people at the New York World thought about that and have released an interactive map that will let you know just how gross your chosen grocery store it.
The map works pretty simply: just put in a neighborhood or a zip code, and the map will gather any data that the state’s Department of Agriculture and Markets has listed for the store’s “critical deficiencies.” Those are defined as things that are an immediate threat to public health. So your mouse droppings in the produce, your raw chicken left out in the sun for a couple hours, your cockroaches just hanging out.
They World notes that Brooklyn Heights’ Garden of Eden was hit with the most critical deficiencies this past year, racking up an impressive 20, ranging from meat residue on knives and counters to wastewater getting in to other sinks. So hooray for us, we’re number one, etc, etc. So get excited, you’ve got a new tool with which to keep yourself healthy or gross yourself out, either one is good really.

I believe this 100%. I walked in there the other day and they had a dirty oscillating fan blowing directly onto the the buffet bar. Little bits of fuzz and dust were flying all over the food.
I'm not shocked about that Garden of Eden either. I can't quite remember what I saw once that made me give them a side eye, but I'm not getting anything from its prepared food counter.
For all the money the store charges for its goods, it should be doing better than that!
I'm not surprised about the results for my local supermarket either. Never liked it, and now there is evidence to support this feeling.
For some reason the results of some of the Trader Joe's and Fairway are not coming up on this tool. Maybe it's just me?
