While the recent explosion of days dedicated to the most seemingly random things – Official National Chocolate Sprinkled Half-Eaten Vegan Donut Day, Especially Salty Pickle Week, etc. – is hard to follow, at least one of these newfangled holidays has come with some perks. This year’s June is being heralded by Mayor de Blasio’s office as New York Music Month, and in honor of the initiative the city is offering a variety of programming and resources to local musicians, including 2,000+ hours of free rehearsal space.

The free hours will be available at nonprofit Spaceworks’ spaces at Park Slope’s Brooklyn Conservatory of Music (58 7th Ave.), Williamsburg’s Williamsburgh Library (240 Division Ave.) and their Long Island City space (33-02 Skillman Ave.). To book a space, go to Spaceworks’ website and get a Spaceworks Card. Then book your space. Then enjoy free space. Very nice.

The free rehearsal space is by far the most impactful offering the Mayor has lined up to celebrate “Music Month”, but there will be some other neat scheduling highlights as well. These include a variety of free concerts (some of which, like SummerStage and Celebrate Brooklyn! are much older and ingrained traditions than “Music Month”), a variety of free conferences and workshops to help musicians with the industry’s business side and an assortment of other random useful free things, like free museum passes, free neighborhood walking tours and a free public piano.
