Was anyone else aware the Brooklyn didn’t yet have its own comedy festival until just this year? I know, it’s crazy, right? It seems like you can get almost anything without leaving the borough, especially festivals. We got concerts, food, film, and art. And it’s Brooklyn, so of course we got jokes. This year, said jokes will be organized into a weekend-long festival under the appropriate header, “Brooklyn Comedy Festival.” It’s the only one there is.
Going down for the week of August 19-24, the festival is set to showcase all kinds of yuks from sketch comedy to stand-up to improv. According to founder Chris Nester, a funnyman himself as well as a native Brooklynite, this is because our very own BK has become “a melting pot of comedy,” which either means that there’s a great variety of local things to laugh with, or, y’know…there’s a lot of stuff to laugh at. We don’t see why it can’t be both.
The festival will take place around venues in Williamsburg and Greenpoint (final schedule TBA), and a vast majority of the shows are free because they know what we’re about here. Performers range from up-and-coming small names to bigger ones like sketch team Murderfist and writers for SNL and Jimmy Fallon (well at least you know someone’s name). And of course, there will be afterparties.
Stay posted by checking their website – this is Brooklyn, so anything can change at the drop of a pair of jorts. So keep your pants on and your head up, because you won’t wanna miss this one.
