In 2014, Brooklynites mourned the closure of the borough’s Big Three DIY venues – Death by Audio, 285 Kent and Glasslands, all felled by the common axe of Vice. Then, two years later in 2016, Glasslands’ former owners, PopGun Presents, officially announced they were working on a new, bigger, more ambitious, permanent and polished incarnation of Glasslands: Elsewhere.
Now, after some delays, the venue has been realized and will be opening this fall in a converted Bushwick warehouse at 599 Johnson Ave. Where Elsewhere lacks the lovably makeshift vibe of Glasslands, it compensates with more space and permanence. The venue boasts over 24,000 square feet of space, housing a cafe, art gallery, 675-person capacity performance hall, 2,800 square feet of private space for musicians and artists, and rooftop bar (not set to open till 2018).
Their first season, which kicks off with a Wednesday, November 1 show by Bruno Major, will include performances from Slow Magic, Anamanaguchi and Parquet Courts. The full lineup is available on their website.
