BK Top 5: The best things to do tonight, from talking apocalypse to riding the night train

Let’s talk about a book-free future. No, not as a goal, ya dummies.

“Monday, Monday” goes the old song, although I’m surprised to learn it’s actually about a relationship or something and not about someone complaining that the weekend is over. Well, you learn something every day! Like how you’re here to learn what wonderful things there are to do tonight that can be found on the Brokelyn Events Calendar.

IF A SONG COULD BE FREEDOM…ORGANIZED SOUNDS OF RESISTANCE
Protest music is more than just lousy dreadlocked white hippies in a drum circle. Plenty of protest songs double as just great songs, and you can browse a whole library of record sleeves, lyrics, flyers and press about some of the 20th century’s best protest songs while also listening to some, at this art exhibit at the Interference Archive.
6pm, Interference Archive, 131 8th Street #4, Gowanus, FREE

BOOKS BENEATH THE BRIDGE: COMMUNITY BOOKSTORE
Well here’s a book discussion that was always going to be relevant, but is even more interesting in light of recent events: agent Brenda Bowen, author Caroline Zancan and store owner Ezra Goldstein will read from and discuss both To Kill A Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman. Leave your kid named Atticus at home, this one might get too emotional for him.
7pm, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 1, Brooklyn Heights, FREE

NIGHT TRAIN WITH GUEST HOST APARNA NANCHERLA
We’re always happy to tell people to go to Night Train, as it’s a great comedy show. This one is special though, since instead of the very funny Wyatt Cenac hosting, the very funny Aparna Nancherla will tag in for him. Laugh at her, laugh at the very gay, very large Guy Branum, bob your head to guest DJ Donwill, however you enjoy this it’s gonna be a great night.
7:30pm, Littlefield, 622 DeGraw Street, $8

BOOK(LESS) DYSTOPIAS AND LINGUISTIC ARMAGEDDONS
Hear from three authors who’ve written novels about the future that all deal with the idea of printed literature and language itself being almost completely extinct. Do it either for a chilling vision of the future, or just so you can feel a little bit better about the fact that even if there’s an emjoi movie now, at least we also still have things like books and magazines written in real words.
7:30pm, Greenlight Bookstore, 686 Fulton Street, Fort Greene, FREE

TALKING SHOP: BUILDING COMMUNITY AROUND GAMES
Just like there are indie movies that explore stranger sides of humanity or just get avant-garde and arty, all with smaller budgets than their Hollywood counterparts, so too is there a vibrant indie video game community out there making strange and more emotionally grounded video games. Hear from them, including local geniuses Baby Castles, and then see a gallery of their work at Kickstarter’s HQ tonight.
7pm, Kickstarter HQ, 58 Kent Street, Greenpoint, FREE
