BK Top 5: The best things to do tonight, from partying with Scorpios to taking in the revolution

Was Hank Scorpio a Scorpio? No one ever said he wasn’t

Well everyone, time to shake off the weekend cobwebs and get your ass back to work. And then after that, stare at the clock until the day is over and think about what you’re gonna do once you’re finally not working again. After all, just because it’s Monday doesn’t mean you have to pretend to be productive. Instead check out these picks from the Brokelyn Events Calendar and dream of not working.

SCORPIO PARTY
I know, you’re thinking, “Oh cool, a party with the theme of working for Homer’s boss, Hank Scorpio. Maybe there’ll be a hammock district!” Sadly, it’s actually one of Sycamore’s monthly Star Sign Parties, where everyone can enjoy tarot readings, flower crowns and cosmic connections, and Scorpios can enjoy drink specials. Hey you know, that doesn’t actually sound too sad.
8pm, Sycamore, 1118 Cortelyou Road, Ditmas Park, FREE

KATE GAVINO AND JASON DIAMOND: LAST NIGHT’S READING
How meta do you like your literary readings? This one is ramping things up to 1000% percent meta, as author Kate Gavino will be talking about her Tumblr, Last Night’s Reading, in which she would write and illlustrate a reading she went to in Brooklyn and which has been turned into a book by the same name. Gavino will talk about going to the talks and what she’s learned from it with Jason Diamond, as well as show off portraits from her favorite readings.
7:30pm, Greenlight Bookstore, 686 Fulton Street, Fort Greene, FREE

THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION
Before there was Black Lives Matter, but right around the time there was Macolm X and Martin Luther King, there were the Black Panthers. If you weren’t the kind of high school student who read about them, or have only seen the movie Panther, you can get an in-depth look at the militant civil rights group and the people who made it move like Huey Newton, Bobby Seale and Eldridge Cleaver. It’s especially good to see if you think police/activist relations are at a low point today.
8:30pm, Videology, 308 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg, $8

FROM ANCIENT GRUDGE TO NEW MUTINY: INTRIGUE AND CONSPIRACY IN FAIR VERONA
Shakespeare! Code! Combine them and you’ve got the ancient pastime of searching for code in Shakespeare. In tonight’s Obscura Talk, linguist and “rogue historian” Dan Veksler will guide you though the political and societal codes and references that Shakespeare’s Rome and Juliet audiences understood easily but might sail over the head of today’s audiences. Kind of like how in 200 years, people will need to study Family Guy deeply.
8pm, Unnameable Books, 600 Vanderbilt Avenue, Prospect Heights, FREE

FRANKLIN PARK READING SERIES
Oh yes it’s ladies’ night at the Franklin Park Reading Series and the feeling’s right, yes it’s ladies’ night but it’s not actually an instance of women’s drinks or admission costing less, it’s actually just a full slate of five female authors . You’ve got people like Vice illustrator Molly Crabapple, Vinyl Poetry editor-in-chief KMA Sullivan, Rachel B. Glaser, who’s been honored by McSweeney’s, and more writers will get up behind the mic and share their stories. Oh what a night.
8pm, Franklin Park, 618 St. John’s Pl., Crown Heights, FREE
