BK Top 5: The best things to do tonight, from getting a neon glow to listening to murder ballads

Who makes the neon signs? Find out tonight! via Flickr user anaxolotl

Ugh, it’s Monday. It’s Monday and it’s called. The only saving grace today is that the NL EAST CHAMPION New York Mets are ahead 2-0 in the NLCS and are two games from the World Series. That should give you a pretty warm feeling inside tonight that helps you go out and enjoy yourself, and with a bunch of great things to do found on the Brokelyn Events Calendar it’s good that something other than whiskey can put some heat in your chest.

AUSTIN KLEON PRESENTS THE STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST JOURNAL
The hardest part of being a creative person is actually starting to get your idea off the ground. It’s always worth wondering, in the immortal words of Homer J. Simpson, “Can’t someone else do it?” Normally the question is now, but artist Austin Kleon is here to tell you otherwise, with a journal full of writing prompts and creative exercises to help you get the juices flowing. He’ll tell you about it and his philosophy of making art tonight, so check it out if you’ve got writer’s block or painter’s block or sculptor’s block.
7pm, Word, 126 Franklin Street, Greenpoint, FREE

NIGHT TRAIN WITH GUEST HOST DAVID CROSS
David Cross’ return to sketch comedy with Bob Odenkirk is imminent and he’s back on your TV with a new season of The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. Given all that, the impulse to what to gawk at a famous TV guy in person should be higher than ever, and you can feed that impulse tonight when Cross steps in for Wyatt Cenac at Night Train, as he tells some jokes and introduces the likes of Raj Sivaraman, Josie Long, Rob Haze and more.
7:30pm, Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, Gowanus, $8

NY OBSCURA SOCIETY CINEMA PRESENTS THE LAND AND GASPER AND SON
New York City used to be a city of neon signs, but the glowing BAR and FOOD beacons are seen less and less these days. Get a look at the craftsmanship that goes into the signs with Gasper and Son, a documentary on a local father and son neon sign shop. And double your movie pleasure with a second movie, The Land, which looks at a Scottish playground that lets kids play with hammers and fires and other dangerous tools under the theory that it’s empowering for kids to manage their own risk with hammers.
7pm, Videology, 308 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg, $14

CHARMING DISASTER PRESENTS MURDER BALLAS MONDAYS
It’s Monday so you might not be in the best of moods. If that’s the case, Branded is here for you with a night devoted to songs all about murder. A whole cast of musicians will be showing up to sing some spooky songs about death, with the whole night led by Charming Disaster, a folk duo who recently had a song appear on Welcome to Night Vale, so you know they know spooky.
8pm, Branded Saloon, 608 Vanderbilt Avenue, Park Slope, FREE

“LUCIFER’S PLEASURE DOME” KENNETH ANGER FILM NIGHT
Pioneering filmmaker Kenneth Anger was making homoerotic short films when America wanted to pretend that there were no such thing as gay people. Fortunately, Anger and the Gay Agenda (Item number one: Please treat us like humans) won out, and today you can see how Anger helped make that happen by watching Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome and Lucifer Rising. Also there’ll be free wine, and that’s always a good thing.
8pm, The Living Gallery, 1094 Broadway, Bushwick, $5
