The contest is open to high school students and beyond. Winners—selected in both the student and adult category—will receive an autographed copy of State by State, a gift certificate to WORD (voted Best bookstore 2008 by the New York Press, just so you know), and may even get to read their essay at the shop’s Nov. 18 State by State release party. Don’t spend too much time fretting over the perfect adjectives: the contest deadline is November 12—that’s Thursday. Send your submission to kelly@wordbrooklyn.com.
From National Novel Writing Month to NYC’s First Independent Bookstore Week, November is building an identity as a month in celebration of the written word. And now, WORD is inviting scribes young and old to express their love of our fair city in sentence form. Simply write between 500 to 1000 words on your favorite part of the city (the rules are open to all boroughs, but yours better be in Brooklyn). The contest is aptly named Neighborhood by Neighborhood, a spin off of “State by State”; a 50 essay, 50 state collection from some of our country’s most esteemed writers.
