Apartment hunt: A visit to upstate Brooklyn

• This week’s apartment roundup begins with a modern 1BR in Crown Heights for $1,922.  The images appear to show the same apartment as the MARK PLUS building promo video, so this may not be the exact layout of the unit, but it is described as a loft duplex. Located on St. Marks between Classon and Franklin, the space would be a good starter home for a newlywed couple looking to settle in to an up and coming neighborhood. The building boasts a long list of amenities we old, dilapidated warehouse and brownstone dwellers have long forgotten exist such as video intercom, on site gym, common court yard, parking and an elevator.

• Here’s another “new Brooklyn” place with lots of luxury amenities but only stock images. A studio in Downtown Brooklyn for $1,970 seems pricey, but the building has an indoor pool, fitness facility, laundry, doorman, roof deck, elevators, parking. Sigh, those features make it seem like living at Spa Castle.

• For something a bit more realistic, this Clinton Hill 3BR for $2,775 is close to Pratt and perfect for shares. Clinton Hill is this year’s “it” nabe, ranking No. 1 on L Magazine’s liveable hood list, so this price is actually pretty reasonable. Expect rent to continue to inflate as bars and restaurants and coffee shops and food co-ops move into the neighborhood, so snap this one up quick.

• Next up we find a spacious 1BR in Upstate Brooklyn Ditmas Park for $1,800. This bright, recently renovated apartment is in a pre-war elevator building with a live in super. There is a washer/dryer in unit and TWO walk in closets (which basically negate each other cause you won’t need so much space to keep mountains of dirty laundry). Still a somewhat well-kept secret, Ditmas Park is an elegant, historic neighborhood with lots of giant Victorian mansion character but also a dose of new Brooklyn trendiness with the Flatbush Food Co-op, the Farm on Adderly and Sycamore on nearby Cortelyou Road.

• Over in Carroll Gardens we found this “cozy” 2BR for $1,850. We all know cozy is usually broker speak for living in a cubby hole, but this place doesn’t look that cramped. Though they did not list images of the bedrooms, the living space looks roomy and has a big faux fireplace (that can hopefully be repainted). There is also mention of a private deck, so that can negate almost any space issues. Just be sure to factor in the cost of eating and drinking out extremely often as Court and Smith Streets are a constant siren call to overindulgence.

  • Went to see the "One Bedroom in Crown Heights" most certainly not the unit in the photos, also doesnt have closets...which might have been nice to mention....

  • Gah, I know that building in Crown Heights. It's right next to the elevated shuttle train and looks like a mental institution. There's not one soft corner in its whole design.
