Yay! Park Slope Armory YMCA opening today

The running track at the Armory Y.

Any time you hear of a new YMCA opening in Brooklyn is a good day—how many Bally’s offer financial aid?—and we’re feeling downright exuberant  about the ribbon-cutting today at the new $16 million Y opening in the Park Slope Armory, at 15th Street and Eighth Avenue. So far all we’ve seen of this rehabbed 1895 fortress is the 1/8th-mile running track (click photo for a bigger version), but good lord is it a looker. The 20,000 square-foot space also boasts 50 pieces of cardio equipment, four multipurpose courts for basketball, soccer and volleyball. The class schedule isn’t out yet, but it will offer spinning, pilates and aerobics along with various family classes. Today’s the opening ceremony, and the complex opens for real on Jan. 30. Starting tomorrow (Jan. 12) they’re selling charter memberships—$40/month for individuals and $72/month for families. There’s some kind of dual-membership deal where you can join this place and the Prospect Park Y on 9th Street, but they don’t give the rates on the web site. For those who don’t live nearby, the Y is offering free day passes through the end of the month to its six other locations in Brooklyn—click the box on this page. I REALLY LOVE THE SPINNING CLASS,BUT UNFORTUNATELY I COULD ONLY ATTEND WEDNESDAYS EVENING DUE TO WORK SCHEDULE. I THINK THE CLASSES ARE TOO EARLY, FOR PEOPLE THAT WORK
IT’S VERY HARD TO RUSH AND BE ABLE TO MAKE IT BY 5:30 PM. COULD YOU TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION MAYBE TO RE-ARRANGE THIS IN THE NEAR FUTURE? THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
