Where to resell your maternity & kids’ clothes

Shoes, $3 to $20, at The Swap Shop.

If you’re a parent you may notice that your inbox is especially quiet today: that’s because Yahoo Groups is having a maintenance blackout this afternoon, so no Park Slope Parents, Brooklyn Parents, etc., at least for a few hours. So we decided to step into the void with a breeder-centric item (sorry, FiPS) on places where you can resell gently used maternity and/or kids’ clothes and gear.

First on the list: Park Slope’s Swap Shop, which takes both, along with baby paraphernelia like strollers and carriers. Gina DiGiovanni runs the shop out of her popular junior hair salon, Kidz Cut Zone. Sellers can reap 30 percent of her resale price in cash or 40 percent store credit, and the store even does pickups. But it really pays to be a buyer because the stuff, from Hannah Anderson to Lily Pulitzer to local designers, is so damned reasonable. Girls dresses are $5 to $15, jeans are $8 and maternity items run from $10 to $20. Some really good finds.

Recently opened in Carroll Gardens is Madison Rose, a maternity resale shop that traffics in high-end wear like jeans from Seven, Citizens, Paige Maternity Jeans, Rock n Republic and Habitual, which can run well over $175 if you pay full retail but sell here for roughly half that. Owner Jilian Di Chiaro says her merch ranges from $6-$150 depending on the brand, but the average piece is around $40. Sellers get 30 to 40 percent of retail value, by appointment only. Our discerning friend at the beautiful Cherry Patter blog says the shop is “an almost good enough reason to get pregnant again!” (No store is that nice.)

Then there’s Still Hip in Clinton Hill, which buys and sells brands like Oink Baby, Zutano, Mini Boden, Baby Gap, Petit Bateau, Oilily, Hanna Andersson, Dogwood, Small Paul, Pea In The Pod, Japanese Weekend and Pumpkin Maternity. They also rent gear like Pack ‘n’ Plays. Prices are 50 to 75 percent off retail, and the shop offers sellers 25 to 45 percent of what they think an item will sell for. Merch drop-offs by appointment only.

  • thanks for the mention, and great roundup. and yes, i think my hubby would agree with you, no store is reason enough for dealing with me pregnant again!

  • KidSponge.com is also a good way to post and sell used maternity and kids items. It allows to support prominent charities in the process. If you're looking to make good use of the clothes and items you don't need. Send them away to someone who needs them, and save them from the landfill!
