A ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ immersion is coming to Bushwick

We're all very excited
We’re all very excited

Might this summer go down as the “The Summer of Wet Hot American Summer?” We’ve got the upcoming Netflix prequel, and last week the cast showed up at both a SummerScreen showing of the movie and a WHAS-themed episode of Ask Me Another. And now, Michelle Joni (who you might also know from adult pre-school), who played an extra who sang the “Love will pervade us/til death separates us” song in the Camp Firwood talent show, is turning a lot in Bushwick into Camp Firewood itself with an immersive Wet Hot American Summer experience featuring  science projects, arts ‘n ‘farts ‘crafts and a talent show.

Yes, if you’ve ever wanted to go to Camp Firewood (and why wouldn’t you, it looks way more fun that real sleepaway camp), your chance to do so has arrived. On Tuesday, August 4th, Bushwick’s The JunXion (39 Knickerbocker Avenue) will be turned into the Wet Hot American Summer camp for an evening of fun and games and talent. Provided that your talent doesn’t SUCK DICK of course. You wouldn’t want this to happen to you, after all.

You’ll be able to have whatever Camp Firewood experience you’re looking for. Both the movie and the prequel series will be shown all night. There’ll be a science project station for you indoor kids, there’ll be arts ‘n crafts for anyone either going through a divorce or looking to counsel someone through theirs, a place to write in your gournal, to get therapy from a can of vegetables and even an open mic at which you can learn The New Way (which is especially good since you just learned how to take your open mic experience higher and higher). And of course that Wet Hot Brooklyn Summer talent show, which you can try out for by submitting a sneak peek of your talent on Instagram under the hashtag #wethotbrooklynsummer. Even better, since we’re all old enough to be camp counselors now, there’ll be free Wet Hot American Wheat Ale courtesy of Finch’s Brewing while it lasts.

The brains behind this operation, Michelle Joni, knows what she’s doing, since she was Tall Debbie in the movie. Joni, tells us that she was the only Camp Towanda (the summer camp where the movie was filmed) camper picked to be an extra in the film, which is how she wound up being the tallest person in the talent show’s trio singing about friendship. She also told us that she needs help from superfans of the movie like you to help pull the event off. She’ll be having a meeting tomorrow, Tuesday July 21, for anyone who wants to play one of the many denizens of Camp Firewood or otherwise volunteer to help make this random Tuesday night the best summer camp experience any of us have ever had. If you’ve always dreamed of being Coop or Andy or Beth or Katie, shoot an email to Joni at stickteam [AT] michellejoni.com and she’ll give you more details. If you just want to attend the experience, you can snag a ticket, currently just $5, here.

This sure sounds like it’s gonna be fun. Now if you’ll excuse us, we have to go smear mud on our ass.
