New map shows how many people were shot in your neighborhood

Guns: They’re good for you!

There are certain things to keep in mind when you’re moving. Price, good schools, whether the bodegas near you are open 24 hours per day and have staff that will befriend you quickly. Also you might want to know how often people get shot in your neighborhood. It’s certainly something worth knowing, and now a new map from the gun journalists at The Trace and the #actually journalists at Slate have put that information in one handy map for you.

The map from The Trace and Slate uses data from the Gun Violence Project to mark all the gun violence in America in the past year. While we know about all of the highly publicized mass shootings in the country, the map itself has markers for 30,284 incidents of gun violence, both the fatal and non-fatal variety in the categories of “homicides, attempted murders, assaults, self-defense shootings, and accidents” according to The Trace.

As you can see in the above picture, the map hows plenty of gun violence all around Brooklyn if you zoom out, which comes as no shock since it’s part of America after all. While we don’t want to cause a panic, you just might see someone get shot while you live here. It happens. Whatever you do, don’t let a security camera catch how you react to a traumatic incident lest you become an object of ridicule for a bunch of scolds who want to police the way you react to it as if they know best. Also maybe give some money to a gun control group that’s working to curb America’s reliance on guns as the solution to literally everything.
