On February 4, the NYPD arrested four protesters at the LGBT Solidarity Rally at Stonewall and now face up to a year in Rikers. Supporters are gathering outside of the New York Criminal Court house to demand that the charges against them are dropped. If you can’t make it out, be sure to sign the petition here.

Know Your Rights and Women’s Self Defense Workshop

This know-your-rights workshop is a response to the increase in harassment and hate crimes, as well as the changes to immigration law. Panelists include Iman Boukadoum of the Muslim Bar Association of New York, the NYPD Hate Crimes Unit, and the Center for Anti-Violence Education. The latest #GetOrganizedBK’s general meeting will be an organizing bootcamp, designed to help build the organizing skills you’ll need for four years of fighting. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, Austin City Council Member Greg Casar, and Philadelphia City Council Member Helen Gym will all be speaking, along with organizers from MoveOn and the Working Families Party. After they speak, there will be various training sessions that you can RSVP for here. If you’re a resident of Brad Lander’s district, you’ll also be able to vote on participatory budgeting at this event, and there’s a full list of times and places to vote here.

Demystifying Government is a series of talks that aims to answer the following questions: How the hell did we get here? How the hell can we make things change? And, perhaps most importantly, how the hell does the government work? Their latest event will focus on the legislative branch, with panelists and topics including pollster David Goldstein on why elected officials fear their constituents; entrepreneur and volunteer Elizabeth Haynes on Congress’ constitutional “power of the purse”; policy wonk Ryan Myers on congressional polarization; and researcher George-Ann Ryan, on misconceptions about America’s banking and budget system. Cookies from Glitter Sweets Kitchen will be available for sale, and each cookie sold will generate $1 for a local nonprofit.

City of Refuge: 24 Hours of Action for Refugees

This rally kicks off a full day of action in support of refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants with temporary protected status. Protesters will gather at 40 Wall Street at 12:30, march to Trinity Church at 75 Broadway at 1:30, and have a know your rights workshop at the church from 2pm to 9pm, with more events to follow on Wednesday.

Since Trump’s inauguration, a group of dedicated postcard-writers have mailed hundreds of postcards, written over a drink or two, to our representatives. They have themed postcards, $5 beer-and-shot specials, and writing prompts for cards you can send anyone you think needs to listen — from Chuck Schumer to NASA. The event is free, but it’s recommended that you donate $2 for stamps and other supplies.

On Tuesday, NYC’s Anarchist Black Cross is holding a letter-writing event for six female political prisoners, including Debbie Sims Africa, Chelsea Manning, and Reverend Joy Powell. They’ll be educating attendees about the incarcerated women and writing letters of support from 7pm to 10pm, and encourage everyone to write letters as well, even if they can’t attend.

A group of dedicated activists are rallying every Wednesday in favor of reproductive rights until the State Senate votes on the Reproductive Health Act. Since the attempted “replacements” for the Affordable Care Act completely neglect reproductive health, and Trump and Pence have doubled down on making access to abortion and reproductive health services a “state’s rights issue,” this legislation is incredibly important for New Yorkers.
