Top 5: The best things to do in Brooklyn tonight, from patriotic basterds to a salute to Canada

It’s Hitler’s worst nightmare, after losing in the World Cup

Welcome to July, you did it! We mean, if that’s where you were trying to get to, you did it. We have a question though. If everyone is fucking off from work on Friday, is Wednesday still the halfway point of the week? Or is this one of those holiday weeks where by Thursday everyone has just decided they’re done with everything? Even the mayor already left town, do we even have laws anymore? Ponder our new lawless, half week thing as you enjoy the best nightlife Brooklyn has to offer, as found on the Brokelyn Event Calendar.

TREAT YOURSELF, EPISODE 4
Just because the normal rhythms of the week are interrupted this time around doesn’t mean that standbys like good old fashioned free comedy are screwed up as well. So you can hit 61 Local for a free evening of laughs provided by Sharron Paul, Amber Nelson and Aparna Nancherla, who’s great, everyone loves her! Plus host Melissa Roche has a sketch from you from her group, Student Loans, which will give you a chance to laugh and not cry for a change when that phrase is involved.
8pm, 61 Local, 61 Bergen Street, Cobble Hill, FREE

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT BINGO
What did you spend all that time obsessively watching Arrested Development for other than the ability to spot references to it a micro-second before other people? For laughs and enjoyment? No, definitely not. So take that hard work you put in sitting down in front of the TV and go dominate Videology’s Arrested Development Bingo. Even if you’re bad at Bingo, at least you’re watching the show with a bunch of other people instead of alone, and you can see if anyone actually shows up as a “never nude.”
9pm, Videology, 308 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg, FREE

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
Hey, the US Women’s World Cup team beat Germany yesterday in the semi-finals! USA! USA! What better way to celebrate than hanging out in the backyard at the People’s Republic of Brooklyn and watching another (albeit fictionalized) beatdown as Lieutenant Aldo Raine’s Basterd’s bring Nazi Germany to their knees with some very stylized violence? To be honest, that’s fun any day, but it’s especially fun today we think.
8:30pm, People’s Republic of Brooklyn, 247 Smith Street, Carroll Gardens, FREE

BOOK LAUNCH: THE EDGE BECOMES THE CENTER
For some people, talking about gentrification never gets old. We don’t even mean that in a snarky way, it’s a genuinely interesting economic and social phenomenon with a lot to unpack. If you’re one of those people trying to unpack it all, the launch party for The Edge Becomes the Center, DW Gibson’s study of gentrification where he went out and talked to everyone from politicians to neighborhood drug dealers about it, is the place for you to be. Who knows, maybe this is the night the issue is solved once and for all!
7pm, powerHouse Arena, 37 Main Street, DUMBO, FREE

CANADA D’EH
What is it about Canada that fascinates Americans? Probably the fact that while they’re so very like us, there’s also just enough separating our two cultures that we regard them with a kind of “Earth B” fascination. Whatever the reason is, today is Canada’s birthday (they’re turning 148, we hope you got them something), so The Well is throwing them a big old birthday party. Will Butler from the Arcade Fire will be there, and the venue will be serving up a Canadian breakfast made up of pancakes, Canadian bacon, Canadian whisky and Canadian craft beer. Will our own resident Canadian be there? She hasn’t said anything about it to us, so maybe she’s observing in a more private ceremony.
noon, The Well, 272 Meserole Street, Bushwick, FREE

See your awesome event given a shoutout, add it to the Brokelyn Event Calendar today!
