Top 10: The best cheap things to do in Brooklyn this week, burlesque bombshell edition

1. We all know the truth is out there—find it at the fancy new East Williamsburg movie house Syndicated, which will be screening the X-Files movie, followed by the debut of the new miniseries. (Monday, Syndicated, $3 for one; $5 for both)

2. For a different otherworldly option, head to Secret Science Club for a lecture with professor and marine mammal researcher Diana Reiss, who has been studying dolphin cognition and communication for 30 years. (Monday, Bell House, FREE)

3. Penina Roth, curator of one of Brooklyn’s best lit events, the Franklin Park Reading Series, is launching a brand-new series in a brand new Crown Heights spot. The Manhattanville Reading Series will focus on emerging writers with one featured author each time; the kick-off will have Will Chancellor, Madeline Stevens, Yahdon Israel and Jesse Kohn. (Tuesday, Manhattanville Coffee, FREE)

4. Or for a more participatory evening, try the Big Quiz Thing’s multimedia trivia spectacular, with a night of of questions and puzzles on all things music. The evening is co-hosted by Rock Star Karaoke, so in between rounds contestants can sing their hearts out. (Tuesday, Livestream Public, $10)

5. The raucous raconteur series How I Learned has been going strong for seven years. Celebrate their birthday with How I Learned to Get Lucky, featuring tales from Lauren Maul, Doogie Horner, Josh Homer, Ginny Leise, Alana Massey, and Blaise Allysen Kearsley. (Wednesday, Union Hall, $6)

6. Or get sexy with Shades of Burlesque, Brooklyn’s only all-black revue, featuring the sultry stylings of “ebony bombshells” Essence Revealed, The Incredible Edible Akynos, Genie Adagio, BrownCocaine Love, Munroe Lilly and Sweet Lorraine. (Wednesday, C’mon Everybody, $15)

7. Now that the New York Islanders have left Nassau Coliseum for Barclays, Brooklyn’s got a hockey team! In conjunction with the exhibit “Brooklyn Americans: Hockey’s Forgotten Promise,” the Brooklyn Historical Society presents An Evening with the New York Riveters and the National Women’s Hockey League. (Thursday, BHS, $5)

8. Run around the Brooklyn Museum with the Society for the Advancement of Social Studies! Inspired by the Coney Island exhibition, there will be three SASS lectures: “The History of Souvenirs in America,” “Carnival Cuisine” and “Early Amusement Parks,” plus the museum is open til 10pm for exploring. (Thursday, Brooklyn Museum, FREE)

9. Cultural pioneers Spoke the Hub — which has been based in Brooklyn since 1979 — presents their 15th annual Winter Follies dance and performance showcase, with five-minute acts from 30+ artists. (Friday, Old First Reformed Church, $15)

10. It’s cold as hell, so it’s definitely a good time to warm up at a dance party. The Wedding Crashers and Lucy Music present Get Up & Get Down, featuring the Loyales, a nine-piece outfit playing everything from R&B and pop to funk and soul. (Friday, 501 Union, FREE w/ RSVP; $10 otherwise)
