In a city as large and diverse as New York, among a race of people as prone to obsession as humanity, it should perhaps come as no surprise that in 2015 a Kickstarter campaign funded the transformation of one Williamsburg apartment hallway into a museum dedicated to the Tonya Harding, Nancy Kerrigan Olympic figure-skating scandal. The museum, THNK1994 (the skaters’ initials) has since left its two-bedroom ‘Burg space for more spacious pastures, namely a Crown Heights storefront at 1436 Atlantic Ave. “Since we’re now representing artists and aiming to do several exhibits a year it made sense,” cofounder Viviana Olen told us of the March move. Settled in their new non-residential home, the museum will, beginning next Saturday, July 29, begin hosting normal business hours. (Previously, the space’s address was undisclosed and accessible only by appointment.)
________
Starting the 29th, THNK1994 will be open noon to 7pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Admission to the main space is free, while if you’d like to go to the backroom where the permanent collection and the museum’s namesake is on display there’s a suggested donation of $6. You can also support the museum by buying some art, merch or a membership. Donations are also welcome.
To celebrate the occasion as well as their newest exhibit, THNK will be hosting an opening gala on Friday, July 28th – Nicole Richie’s 2007 Memorial Day BBQ. The exhibit will pay homage to the “scandals that guided us through the decade,” elevating the “icons of the aughts” to the levels of classic rockstars; the event will have refreshments and limited space.
Also coming up at THNK1994 is a museum mixer and witch gathering – A Spell to Bind Donald Trump and All Those Who Abet Him. The celebration of the waning crescent moon is BYOWC: Bring your own white candle; boxed wine will be provided. A mass ceremony will be led by Witch Callie Watts, any and all witches as well as potential future witches are welcome.
The night of spell-casting will also include a tour of the museum’s Tonya Harding & Nancy Kerrigan permanent collection. Tickets are pay what you can, and the event is this Friday, July 21 from 11pm to 1am.
