It’s been half a century since Justice Potter Stewart said of pornography and obscenity, “I know it when I see it,” but this weekend, New Yorkers will see it up close and (potentially very) personal at the first annual NYC Porn Film Festival. Bushwick, the freshly crowned bastion of high art, will play host to the open submission festival that aims to “give credit to adult film as a significant and socially/culturally relevant art form.” Though submissions for content are now closed, $69 all-weekend passes and $5-$20 tickets to individual movies are still available.
With Pornhub as the event’s primary sponsor, the festival’s lineup is not to be *ahem* taken lightly. Tila Tequila’s “Backdoored & Squirting” sets the mood Friday at Secret Project Robot, and the three-day roster of adult entertainment is sprinkled with talks by academics, entrepreneurs, and personal hero of mine, Cindy Gallop, whose apartment was the backdrop for Biggie’s “Nasty Girl” video.
If the submission genres of messy, scifi/future, movement, and animated/fantasy aren’t enough to lure you, the instructional videos might be the deciding factor. From “a lesbian lesson in backdoor exploration” to a dissection of the science behind the orgasm, the festival curators have set out to prove that porn isn’t all fun and games. Whether you’re a dom, a top, a bottom, asexual, or somewhere in between, there’s something here for you. Some of the films don’t even have sex in them! (But where’s the fun in that, eh?)
Stop by Secret Project Robot Friday, February 27 at 5:30pm, through Sunday, March 1 at midnight to live out all your teenage fantasies and maybe develop some new ones. Stop back next week for coverage of what’s promised to be a true “42nd street 1980’s cinema experience.”
